ST. PAUL, MN – While digging on a construction site near Worcester, builders stumbled upon a treasure trove unlike anything seen in Britain for over a century. What they unearthed was one of the largest hoards of Roman coins ever found in the country, valued at more than $126,000. The discovery, which took place late last year, has left archaeologists astounded by its size and significance.
Discovery of the Worcestershire Conquest Hoard
The massive collection of 1,368 coins was found in the Leigh and Bransford area, just west of Worcester. Dating back to the reign of Emperor Nero, the hoard includes mostly silver denarii, with coins minted in Rome as far back as 157 BC.
Experts believe that the coins belonged to a wealthy farmer who likely supplied grain and livestock to the Roman army. This discovery is not only one of the largest from the Roman Conquest period but also the largest ever found from Nero’s reign in Britain.
A Link to Britain’s Ancient Past
The hoard is invaluable to understanding the local history of Roman Britain, particularly in the Worcestershire region. The discovery provides a glimpse into the life and economy of the area nearly 2,000 years ago, when the Malvern Hills may have marked the western boundary of the Roman Empire.
Among the coins, archaeologists found a single gold coin, identified as an Iron Age stater minted by the local Dobunni tribe, which lived in the area between AD 20 and AD 45. The pot containing the coins is thought to have been made in one of the pottery kilns at the base of the Malvern Hills, further linking the find to the region’s rich history.
Preservation and Public Display
Following its discovery, the hoard was declared a treasure by officials, and local authorities have launched efforts to raise funds for its preservation and exhibition. Worcestershire Heritage, Art & Museums is aiming to gather $7,500 to help bring the hoard to the public, where it can be displayed for future generations.
Local leaders are excited about the cultural importance of the find and hope it will be a point of pride for Worcestershire residents.
This coin hoard adds to a growing list of significant discoveries in the region, following other major finds in 1999 and 2011, which demonstrate the area’s rich history and connection to Roman Britain.
