MIAMI, FL – A Venezuelan migrant working as an Amazon driver collided with a Florida mother who was pushing her 4-month-old baby in a stroller, resulting in severe injuries for the woman and sending the infant into the street, according to authorities and video evidence.
The incident occurred in the Ives Estates area near Miami, where the mother, whose identity remains undisclosed, was walking with her child and dog. Allegedly, 45-year-old Sarahy Parra-Ovalles hit them with her car. Video footage shows the mother being dragged onto the vehicle’s hood.
Parra-Ovalles stopped momentarily to adjust the stroller and place the baby back inside before fleeing the scene. The infant was left alone in the intersection, and the mother was left bleeding from a head injury, according to the family’s attorney, Judd Rosen.
The mother sustained a significant brain injury, a fractured skull, and a brain hemorrhage but is now recovering at home. Despite her condition, she had to pump breastmilk from her ICU bed, which her husband then took home to their baby, who fortunately was not harmed.
Rosen described the hit-and-run as one of the most distressing incidents he had encountered as a parent.
Parra-Ovalles, who arrived in the U.S. on a tourist visa in 2019 that expired in 2021, had been granted Temporary Protected Status, allowing her to work. She was arrested on Friday on charges related to leaving the scene of an accident involving serious injury but was released on bond soon after.
The attorney for the victim expressed frustration that Parra-Ovalles was released so quickly, questioning the effectiveness of the justice system in this case.
Amazon has since confirmed that Parra-Ovalles is no longer delivering for the company. A spokesperson stated that they are cooperating with law enforcement in the investigation and expressed concern for the family.
Rosen criticized companies like Amazon and Uber, arguing that they have compromised safety standards in favor of faster deliveries. He noted that he frequently receives reports of dangerous incidents involving these services and suggested that these companies prioritize profits over safety.
Parra-Ovalles had previous traffic violations, including a 2019 stop sign violation and a 2020 careless driving incident, both of which were dismissed. Rosen indicated that these infractions would be relevant in any potential legal action against Amazon.
Rosen, who led the $1.2 billion lawsuit for victims of the 2021 Surfside condo collapse, is prepared to take on Amazon in court.
He believes that only financial penalties can effectively change the company’s behavior, though he acknowledged that no amount of money could alleviate the trauma experienced by the family. Let us know in the comments section below what you think should happen to Parra-Ovalles!
