HASTINGS, MN – John Allan Lee, 57, from Hastings, Minnesota, has been charged with possession of an explosive device. This charge follows an incident in which a homemade explosive was discovered near an elementary school.
On February 10, 2023, a local resident reported finding a suspicious object resembling a “cherry bomb” wrapped in a handkerchief by a telephone pole close to an elementary school in Hastings.
The concerned individual contacted the police to investigate the matter.
Bomb Squad and FBI Involvement
Upon inspection by law enforcement, it was determined that the device was not a cherry bomb.
The St. Paul Bomb Squad was called in to handle the situation, and due to the device’s proximity to the school, an FBI bomb technician was also summoned. An investigation revealed that the object was a functional improvised explosive device (IED).
DNA Evidence and Arrest
On August 10, 2023, Hastings Police collaborated with the FBI on the case. DNA evidence found on both the inside and outside of the device was linked to John Allan Lee. Lee was subsequently detained during the execution of a search warrant on September 12, 2023.
During questioning, Lee acknowledged that he likely possessed the device at some point but denied placing it near the school. He also admitted to being familiar with the area where the device was found.
