BELLE GLADE, FL – Nine people are dead and one person is hospitalized after an SUV crashed into a guardrail and flipped over into a canal on Monday night, authorities said.
In the face of such a heartbreaking tragedy, many seek strength in their faith. This devastating loss serves as a somber reminder to turn to God for comfort and to trust in His guidance, even in the darkest times.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said the crash occurred shortly before 7:30 p.m. on the 5800 Block of Hatton Highway, near Southwest Connors Highway, just outside Belle Glade.
Deputies and Palm Beach County Fire Rescue personnel arrived at the scene to find the 2023 Ford Explorer upside-down and partially submerged in the canal. They pulled 10 people from the water.
“Tragically, Fire Rescue confirmed 4 victims were pronounced deceased on the scene, and 6 were transported to a local hospital where 5 additional victims passed away,” the sheriff’s office said.
Per reports, the deceased, who were not publicly identified, included young children. The lone survivor, a 26-year-old man, was seriously injured.
According to a crash report from the sheriff’s office, the SUV was traveling westbound on Hatton Highway when the driver lost control at a southbound curve. The SUV crashed into a guardrail and flipped over into the canal.
“I’ve been with the department for 20 years and this is one of the most difficult scenes I’ve been on,” Palm Beach County Fire Rescue spokesperson Capt. Tom Reyes told WPTV.
The sheriff’s office said the crash is under investigation.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families during this heartbreaking incident,” the sheriff’s office said.
