VOLUSIA COUNTY, FL – Tempers erupted at Deltona Middle School in Volusia County, Florida when two parents allegedly attacked a school resource deputy. The altercation followed a heated dispute about their son’s battery charge for shoving a fellow student. The parents now face a series of serious charges, including battery on a law enforcement officer and armed robbery.

Altercation Escalates After Disagreement

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office reported that Jorge Rivera and Dagmarie Iturrino arrived at the school on Tuesday morning to protest the battery charge against their son. The charge stemmed from an incident the previous day in which the boy allegedly shoved a female classmate.

During a meeting with school officials and the resource deputy, tensions ran high. “When Jorge didn’t like the outcome of the meeting, he became irate, started screaming at the deputy and was asked to leave,” the sheriff’s office said.

The situation worsened in the hallway. Iturrino allegedly pushed the deputy against a wall. Moments later, Rivera allegedly punched the deputy in the head, causing her to fall to the ground, before grabbing her Taser.

“The deputy was able to stand up, draw her firearm, command Jorge to drop the Taser, and take him into custody,” the sheriff’s office stated. The deputy was later treated for concussion symptoms.

Charges and Sheriff’s Reaction

Rivera and Iturrino are now facing multiple charges, including battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest with violence, disrupting a school function, and trespassing. Rivera is also charged with armed robbery and grand theft for allegedly taking the Taser. A hate crime enhancement was added after Rivera reportedly used a “derogatory slur” against the deputy.

Sheriff Mike Chitwood didn’t hold back in his criticism of the parents’ actions. “If you’re wondering why some kids show no fear of consequences in today’s society, look no further than these parents as exhibit A,” Chitwood said in a statement. “I’m glad they’re locked up, and I look forward to them being held fully accountable for this blatant attack on our deputy who was just doing her job.”

Broader Implications

This incident raises concerns about the impact of parental behavior on school environments and law enforcement safety.

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office has emphasized its commitment to ensuring that all individuals—staff, students, and law enforcement—are protected from violence in educational settings. Rivera and Iturrino remain in custody as authorities continue their investigation.
