GAHANNA, OH – The folks over at Realtor.com haver just named Gahanna, Ohio, the “hottest ZIP code in the country” – thanks to its affordable housing and low cost of living. As rising home prices and high mortgage rates continue to affect many regions, places like Gahanna have become attractive options for new homebuyers.

This Columbus suburb, with the ZIP code 43230, has topped the list for a second consecutive year. It’s followed by Ballwin, Missouri, near St. Louis, and Salem, Massachusetts. Many of the top-ranked areas are located in the Midwest and Northeast, where lower costs of living and housing affordability make them appealing to buyers.

Danielle Hale, chief economist at Realtor.com, explained that while mortgage rate relief is beginning to appear, homebuyers are still prioritizing affordability.

This has been a consistent trend over the past few years as housing costs remain high. She added that these areas provide more space without giving up urban amenities.

In Gahanna, a town of about 35,000 people, the median home listing price is $345,000, with homes staying on the market for an average of just 11 days.

The area, located northeast of Columbus, is known for its lush parks and green spaces, earning it the title of the “Herb Capital of Ohio.” It also boasts a popular Herbal Cocktail Trail and over 750 acres of recreational spaces.

Affordability is a key factor in this year’s ranking. Six of the top 10 ZIP codes have median home prices below the national average, with two others only slightly above it.

Job availability also plays a role in attracting new buyers, as the metro areas in cities like Columbus, St. Louis, and Rochester, New York, have unemployment rates lower than the national average.

Rochester, with a median home price of $165,000, is the most affordable market in the top 10. On the higher end, Basking Ridge, New Jersey, has a median listing price of $995,000.

Interestingly, no Southern or Western cities made this year’s list, indicating a shift in buyer interest away from regions that saw significant price growth during the pandemic. Let us know in the comments if you think there’s a better place than Gahanna!
