JACKSON TOWNSHIP, PA – A house fire in Jackson Township, Pennsylvania, led to an unexpected discovery early Friday morning: a large-scale illegal marijuana growing operation hidden in the basement. Authorities were called to the scene around 4:39 a.m., only to find that what began as a fire quickly turned into a major criminal investigation. The blaze, which firefighters fought to control, revealed a hydroponic marijuana system, along with other illegal items, in the residence.
Firefighters Respond to Blaze on North Alpine Drive
Emergency units rushed to North Alpine Drive at 4:39 a.m. Friday, responding to a report of a structure fire in Jackson Township. As firefighters worked to put out the flames, they made an alarming discovery: a hydroponic marijuana growing system in the basement. The equipment and numerous plants hinted at an illicit operation that had been hiding in plain sight.
Once the fire was under control, police quickly secured the property and obtained a search warrant. Investigators uncovered not only the marijuana grow system but also a handgun, various illegal drugs, and related paraphernalia. The basement, where the system had been set up, was the apparent source of the fire.
Electrical Malfunction Identified as Fire Cause
The Northern York County Regional Police Department’s Fire Investigator determined that the fire was caused by an electrical issue originating near the hydroponic system.
The fire’s origin points to a possible malfunction of the system, which had been set up to grow marijuana inside the home. The investigation revealed that the system was not only illegal but also the likely cause of the dangerous blaze.
Arrest Made in Connection to Grow Operation
Following the discovery, authorities arrested a 27-year-old man, a resident of the home, on several charges. The man, whose identity has not been released, was taken into custody at the scene.
He now faces multiple felony charges, including endangering the welfare of children and manufacturing a controlled substance.
Additionally, he is charged with six misdemeanor counts of recklessly endangering others. Authorities did not disclose whether the man had children living in the home at the time of the fire.
Ongoing Investigation and Call for Tips
As of now, the investigation into the operation is still ongoing. Authorities are continuing to gather evidence and track the full scope of the illegal operation.
Police are asking anyone with information about the case to come forward or submit anonymous tips. The Red Cross has stepped in to assist the six displaced residents and three pets affected by the fire, offering shelter and support.
