LANCASTER, SC – A utility worker in Lancaster County, South Carolina, stumbled upon a chilling scene last week: skeletal remains scattered across a wooded area. Authorities are now working tirelessly to identify the remains and uncover the circumstances surrounding the death, which they believe happened years ago.
Bones Scattered Over 100-Yard Area
The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office reported that the remains were discovered on Nov. 13 in a wooded area off Bethel Road, located in the southwestern part of the county. Deputies and investigators arrived at the scene and found bones scattered across approximately 100 yards, along with other pieces of evidence. The search was suspended on Monday after authorities recovered “several bones and other items of evidence.”
The remains were quickly confirmed to be human and sent to the Richland County Coronerâs Office, where a forensic anthropologist is now examining them. The identity of the deceased, along with the cause and manner of death, remains unknown.
“It is evident that the personâs death did not occur recently and that the remains have been exposed to the elements for a period of time likely measured in years,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement, assuring the public that there is no known threat in the area.

Sheriff Barry Faile emphasized the collaborative nature of the investigation. “This is a team investigation involving the sheriffâs office, the Lancaster County Coronerâs Office, the Forensic Anthropology Division of the Richland County Coronerâs Office, and Foothills Search & Rescue,” Faile said. He expressed hope that the analysis of the remains will yield critical information.
âWe hope examination of the remains by the anthropologist and the coroner will provide information leading to the identity of this person, which is always a first step in determining when, where, and how the person died,â he stated.
