SOUTHINGTON, CT – A daring rescue unfolded Thursday in Southington, Connecticut, as emergency crews saved an injured hiker stranded on an icy cliff. With ropes and precision, firefighters brought the victim safely to solid ground after a tense operation near Wassel Reservoir.

Emergency Teams Rush to the Scene

The call came in at 12:35 p.m. when Southington Fire Department received word of a hiker in trouble off Caretaker Road.

Responding quickly, firefighters teamed up with Southington Police, who deployed a drone to pinpoint the victim’s location.

The hiker, injured and stuck on a steep, icy ridgeline, faced a perilous situation beside the reservoir.

High-Stakes Rope Rescue

Using advanced rope techniques, rescuers executed a high-angle evacuation.

Safe Landing and Hospital Transport

Once on the ground, the hiker was handed off to an ambulance crew waiting nearby. The individual was then taken to New Britain General Hospital for further treatment.

The successful rescue marked a victory for the coordinated efforts of local emergency teams.

Training and Tools Seal the Deal

The Southington Fire Department credited the operation’s success to specialized skills honed through a 2019 FEMA grant for technical rope rescue training.

A donation from the Ragged Mountain Foundation also equipped the team with critical gear, proving essential in this high-stakes mission.
