MESA, AZ – In the chaos of a school cafeteria, an 8-year-old Arizona boy transformed an ordinary lunchtime into a life-saving moment. Thomas Conley, a student at Porter Elementary School in Mesa, rushed to his friend’s aid when Isaiah Rodriguez began choking on a grape. With no time to hesitate, Thomas performed abdominal thrusts, successfully clearing his friend’s airway and restoring his breathing.
The Choking Incident
It was November 14 when the alarming incident unfolded. Thomas and Isaiah were sitting together in the cafeteria when Isaiah suddenly started to choke on a grape. Realizing something was wrong, Thomas acted immediately without hesitation, performing the Heimlich maneuver to help his friend.
“Without hesitation, Thomas sprang into action and performed abdominal thrusts, successfully clearing Isaiah’s airway,” Mesa Public Schools wrote in a post on Facebook.
They also shared surveillance footage of the event, showing Thomas’s calm and quick response. Thanks to Thomas’s bravery, Isaiah was able to breathe normally again.
“I was just doodling in my notebook and then I just heard Isaiah crying, and I was just like, ‘what’s wrong?’ and I realized he was choking,” Thomas recalled during a video shared by the fire department.
Isaiah, understandably shaken by the experience, said, “I was terrified.”
Recognition of Thomas’s Bravery
Just days later, Thomas’s actions were formally acknowledged. On Tuesday, first responders from the Mesa Fire and Medical Department visited Porter Elementary to honor Thomas in front of his classmates. His family and school officials looked on as Thomas received praise for his life-saving actions.
“We are so proud of him,” said his mother, Candice Conley, adding that Thomas is “one of those little guys who’s just into action,” a comment echoed by his father, Christopher Conley.
Along with his family’s pride, Isaiah’s mom, Maria Anderson, a teacher at the school, expressed her gratitude.
“I’m super grateful, and I wanted him to know how proud I was of him and how thankful I was,” she said. “Him and my son have been friends for a long time.”
Community and Fire Department Acknowledgment
As part of the recognition, the Mesa Fire and Medical Department presented Thomas with a certificate to honor his bravery. The department shared their appreciation for Thomas’s quick response, calling it a moment of “extraordinary bravery.”
“We are honored to recognize a Mesa Public Schools young hero from Porter Elementary,” the fire department wrote on their Facebook page.
“Thomas turned a regular lunchtime into an extraordinary act of bravery, making a huge difference. Seeing his friend in distress, Thomas wasted no time and jumped into action, saving Isaiah’s life from a choking incident.”
This act of courage has left a lasting impression on the community, proving that sometimes heroes don’t wear capes—they’re just regular kids ready to help in the most critical moments.
