BERLIN TOWNSHIP, NJ — A routine walk to school turned into a terrifying encounter for an 8-year-old girl in Camden County, New Jersey—but her quick thinking and fearless spirit helped her break free from a potential abductor.
Girl Power in Action
The child was walking alone near Washington and Grove Avenues around 8:45 a.m. Wednesday when a man she didn’t know allegedly approached from behind and tried to grab her. According to police, the girl managed to wriggle free—and possibly injured her attacker in the process.
Officials say the young student may have stabbed the man in the face with a pencil she had with her. After the struggle, she ran straight to John F. Kennedy Elementary School, where she immediately reported what happened. Fortunately, she was not hurt.
Search for the Suspect
Authorities are now on the lookout for the man, who was last seen wearing all black clothing, a baseball cap, and sporting a dark beard. The school district responded by triggering heightened security measures and canceling all after-school activities for the day.
Local law enforcement is increasing patrols around nearby neighborhoods as a precaution and urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
Community on Edge, but Inspired
Residents expressed concern and disbelief, as incidents like this are rare in the area. While the attempted abduction has rattled the community, many are now rallying around the courageous child whose bold reaction may have saved her life.
Did You Know?
- In the United States, over 200 attempted abductions by strangers occur each year, with girls aged 10–14 being the most common targets (National Center for Missing & Exploited Children).
- Self-defense tools like pencils, keys, and backpacks have been used in multiple thwarted abduction attempts, according to FBI child safety reports.
- Teaching children simple safety strategies—like yelling, running, and using objects around them—can significantly reduce the risk of abduction (National Crime Prevention Council).
Moment for Reflection
In the quiet morning hours, an ordinary child displayed extraordinary courage. Her brave instinct to fight back reminds us that even the smallest among us are capable of great strength when it matters most. As parents and neighbors, may we be vigilant, supportive, and grateful for the unseen protection that sometimes shows up in the most unexpected forms—like a pencil gripped in the hand of a determined little girl.
