MARION COUNTY, FL – A white Florida woman has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for fatally shooting her black neighbor in the midst of an ongoing dispute. Susan Lorincz, 60, was convicted of manslaughter after she killed 35-year-old Ajike “A.J.” Owens in June 2023. The sentence, handed down on Monday, follows a tense and tragic argument between the two neighbors, who had been clashing over the noise caused by Owens’ children.

The Fatal Dispute Between Neighbors

The conflict between Lorincz and Owens had been brewing for months. The trouble began over Owens’ children playing near both of their homes in Ocala, Florida, a city roughly 80 miles northwest of Orlando. Prosecutors revealed that the tension escalated when Owens confronted Lorincz after she allegedly threw roller skates and an umbrella at the children. Lorincz denied these claims, but the altercation continued to simmer.

On the night of the fatal shooting, Owens, a mother of four, approached Lorincz’s front door, banging and yelling. Lorincz claimed she acted in self-defense, saying she feared for her life, as she had been harassed by Owens for several years. However, a jury rejected her self-defense claim, leading to her manslaughter conviction. Lorincz fired a single shot from her .380-caliber handgun, killing Owens through the door.

The Courtroom Battle and Sentence

During the sentencing hearing, Circuit Judge Robert Hodges acknowledged Lorincz’s troubled past, citing evidence of childhood abuse and mental health issues. Despite this, he found the shooting “completely unnecessary,” emphasizing that it was more motivated by anger than fear. Lorincz had faced a possible 30-year sentence, but the judge opted for a slightly reduced term.

“I so wish I could go back and change things so she was still here,” Lorincz said in her statement to the court, adding, “I never intended to kill anyone.” The victim’s family, however, expressed their devastation over Owens’ death. Owens’ mother, Pamela Dias, spoke emotionally about the irreversible pain caused by the loss of her daughter. “We’re hurting with a pain that will never, never go away,” she said. “There’s a hole in our heart that will never mend. Susan destroyed our family.”

Reactions From the Community and Legal Perspectives

The case has sparked controversy in Ocala, particularly in the Black community, where protests erupted after Lorincz was charged with manslaughter rather than second-degree murder. The lesser charge drew criticism, with some arguing that it did not adequately reflect the gravity of the crime. Marion County, which includes Ocala, has a Black population of around 12%, and many felt the decision was influenced by racial dynamics.

Lorincz’s defense attorney, Assistant Public Defender Amanda Sizemore, argued for a more lenient sentence, citing Lorincz’s mental health issues and the claim that Owens had been the aggressor during the confrontation. However, Judge Hodges rejected this argument, stressing the lasting impact of Owens’ death on her children. “They’ll live their whole lives without their mother, which I think is a very significant harm inflicted by Ms. Lorincz,” he said.

Children Without Their Mother

The tragic death of A.J. Owens has left her children without their mother and devastated her family. Despite Lorincz’s claims of self-defense, the shooting was deemed unnecessary and unjustifiable, leaving a lasting scar on both families involved. As Lorincz begins her 25-year sentence, the community continues to process the deep emotional impact of the events, particularly on the young children who will carry the weight of this tragedy with them forever.

In times like these, it is important to remember the words from Matthew 5:4, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” Though no sentence can ever undo the pain caused by her death, the hope for healing lies in the support of loved ones and the strength drawn from their faith. A.J.’s family will carry her memory, and in their sorrow, they will find moments of solace as they move forward with the legacy of her love. Please pray for these now motherless children.
