MONTGOMERY, AL – A bomb exploded outside the State Attorney General’s Office, shaking downtown Montgomery, Alabama and putting lives at risk. Kyle Calvert, the man behind this violent attack, has been sentenced to nine years in federal prison for his actions.

A Deadly Attempt

On February 24, 2024, Kyle Calvert planted a shrapnel-filled explosive device outside the Alabama Attorney General’s Office. The bomb, packed with nails and screws, was designed to inflict serious harm. After igniting the fuse, Calvert fled the scene, leaving the explosive behind. Fortunately, the device did not cause any injuries.

The risk of the attack was high. Had the bomb gone off as intended, it could have killed or seriously injured anyone in the area, especially the people working at the government office. Despite the lack of casualties, the threat was real and dangerous.

The Investigation and Arrest

Following a swift investigation by federal and local law enforcement, Calvert was arrested on April 10, 2024. Prior to planting the explosive, Calvert had been seen posting political stickers around downtown Montgomery, including some that said “Support your local Antifa.” While he later denied any affiliation with Antifa, these actions hinted at his political motives.

In his plea agreement, Calvert admitted to manufacturing the device and using nails and screws to make it more lethal. His attempt to intimidate and harm public officials was clear.

A Sentence of Justice

On November 22, 2024, Kyle Calvert was sentenced to nine years in federal prison. The sentence is a direct response to the seriousness of his crime and serves to hold him accountable for his violent actions.

U.S. Attorney General Merrick B. Garland condemned the bombing, stating, “Kyle Calvert attacked the Alabama Attorney General’s Office with a shrapnel-filled explosive and then fled the scene, but this sentence ensures he will not escape accountability for his crime.” Garland also emphasized how acts of violence like this endanger public servants and the communities they serve.

FBI Director Christopher Wray added, “Today’s sentencing is the final step holding Kyle Calvert accountable for detonating a shrapnel-filled explosive device outside a public office in downtown Montgomery.”

A Close Call for Public Safety

While the explosion did not cause injuries, the bombing attempt on the Attorney General’s Office shows the risks posed by violent acts, especially those targeting public institutions. The situation could have turned tragic, but law enforcement’s quick response prevented any further harm.

The conviction of Kyle Calvert serves as a clear message that those who resort to violence to push their political views will face serious consequences.

Garland added, “Acts of violence like this one against our public institutions endanger public servants and entire communities, and they must not be tolerated. I am grateful to the FBI, ATF, and our state and local law enforcement partners for ensuring accountability for this attack, and for the work they do every day to protect our communities.”

While Kyle Calvert may have supported certain left-wing ideologies, there is no direct evidence that he was formally part of Antifa.
