MESA, AZ – On a tense Tuesday evening, a dramatic rescue unfolded on U.S. 60 in Mesa, Arizona, when a police officer and an off-duty firefighter teamed up to save a woman trapped inside a blazing vehicle. The fiery scene, captured on body camera footage, showed the truck flipped on its side, flames growing, and a frantic effort to free the driver.

Swift Action at the Crash Site

Chandler Police Department released video from Motor Officer Brian Larison, who arrived at the chaotic crash southeast of Phoenix. Footage reveals bystanders struggling to smash the truck’s window as flames licked the vehicle.

Larison, armed with a police baton, rushed in and shattered the glass while a passerby sprayed a small fire extinguisher to hold back the fire.

“I raked the window to try to get her out, and as she started to step out, the truck fell back on all four tires,” Larison explained in a voiceover paired with the footage.

Unexpected Ally in the Flames

As the rescue intensified, Larison spotted an off-duty Peoria firefighter, fully suited in fire-retardant gear, stepping into the fray.

“For some reason, I looked out of the corner of my eye and there’s this off-duty fireman, and he’s got all his fire-retardant gear on,” Larison recalled.

“So I go up and I’m like, ‘dude, go get her, get her out.’ And so he got her out of the truck.”

Together, Larison and the firefighter pulled the woman from the wreckage and carried her to the median, away from the engulfed vehicle.

Brotherhood in the Heat of the Moment

Amid the rescue, gratitude flashed between the two heroes.

“I’m glad you’re here, brother,” Larison told the firefighter.

The firefighter, caught off guard by the emergency, replied, “Bro, I was just going to work.”

Police praised the courage shown in the operation.

“This is the kind of dedication and bravery our officers bring to the job every day,” they stated.

The woman escaped the burning truck thanks to the quick thinking and teamwork of Larison and the off-duty firefighter, turning a potential tragedy into a story of survival.
