ARIVACA, AZ – A routine hunting trip in Arizona took a perilous turn on Friday, February 21, 2025, when a man tumbled down rough terrain near Arivaca, fracturing his leg. With no easy way out, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) sprang into action, launching a high-stakes rescue operation to pull him from the rugged wilderness near the state’s southern border.

Helicopter Crew zeroes In

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department reached out to CBP for help after the hunter’s injury was reported.

In response, CBP dispatched an Air and Marine Operations (AMO) Black Hawk helicopter crew and a specialized Border Patrol Search, Trauma, and Rescue (BORSTAR) team. Time was ticking—the hunter was stranded in a remote spot, far from any road.

After a swift aerial sweep, the helicopter team spotted the injured man in a harsh, inaccessible area. The terrain posed a serious challenge, but the crew didn’t hesitate to act.

Daring Descent and Critical Care

With no landing zone available, two BORSTAR emergency medical technicians (EMTs) made a bold move. They slid down a 30-foot rope from the hovering helicopter, reaching the hunter in minutes.

On the ground, they quickly evaluated his condition, confirming a suspected leg fracture, and worked to stabilize the injury.

Once the hunter was secure, the team fitted him with an Air Rescue Vest for a smooth extraction. The helicopter hoisted him up and delivered him to a paved road nearby, where more BORSTAR EMTs stood ready to assist.

Hand-off and Hospital Run

At the roadside, the Arivaca Fire District took over, whisking the hunter away to a local hospital for further treatment. The seamless hand-off capped off a tense but successful rescue, ensuring the man received the care he urgently needed.

“This rescue is a testament to our unmatched aviation precision capabilities,” Jose Muriente, AMO Deputy Director, Tucson Air Branch, said in a statement.

“I am incredibly proud of the professionalism our UH-60 crew and BORSTAR team showed today, to save the life of this hunter.”

The operation showcased CBP’s rapid response and skill in navigating Arizona’s unforgiving landscape, pulling off a life-saving mission against the odds.
