SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CA – A heart-stopping moment near Lake Tahoe, California turned into a dramatic rescue after a hiker’s dog tumbled 200 feet over a dangerous waterfall. Rescuers rushed to the scene, fearing the hiker might take extreme risks to reach his injured pet. The intense rescue effort unfolded at Cascade Falls, leaving onlookers stunned by the ordeal.

The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office revealed on Thursday how they managed to pull off the daring rescue. Moscow, the injured dog, had fallen from a towering cliff near Emerald Bay. The hiker, panicked and desperate to help his companion, dialed 911 at around 10:22 a.m.

A Desperate Situation at Cascade Falls

Authorities acted fast, knowing time was critical.

“Moscow’s owner was determined to find a way down the cliff to get to Moscow,” the sheriff’s office stated.

But with the icy conditions and steep terrain, the risk of another fall was high. El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue teams immediately stepped in to avoid further disaster.

Search teams, along with El Dorado Animal Control and a drone provided by South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue, launched the operation. Volunteers reached the base of the falls, where they found Moscow struggling and unable to move. Fortunately, an ice climber in the area had already stopped to assist the injured dog.

Rescuers Use Special Gear to Save Moscow

Moscow’s injuries made it nearly impossible for him to walk.

Rescuers knew they had to act carefully as the terrain was coated in ice. They secured Moscow in a specialized harnessed backpack designed to carry animals. Rescuers then navigated the slippery trail, slowly making their way to safety.

After the grueling hike, they transported Moscow to a waiting vehicle, where he could warm up before heading to an emergency veterinarian.

A Happy Ending for the Hiker and His Loyal Companion

Despite the fall and harsh conditions, Moscow pulled through! The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the dog was “doing well” after receiving medical care.

Thanks to the quick action of rescuers and a good Samaritan, the terrifying ordeal ended with Moscow’s survival.
