VALLEJO, CA – A bold copper wire theft has thrown a California school into chaos, forcing an abrupt closure and leaving students scrambling for alternate learning options. Officials revealed that the brazen crime caused major damage to the school’s electrical systems, making in-person classes impossible for the week.
The Vallejo City Unified School District confirmed on Saturday that Solano Widenmann Leadership Academy, located in the San Francisco Bay Area, had been shut down due to extensive damage linked to the stolen copper wiring.
Repairs are projected to take about a week. However, officials warned that if delays persist, they will relocate students to other schools to limit disruptions.
Emergency Learning Hubs Set to Open
In response to the unexpected closure, the school quickly organized “alternative learning hubs” which opened Wednesday. The hubs aim to ensure that students don’t fall behind academically while the building remains offline.
The school outlined that six nearby locations would be used as learning hubs: Cooper, Dan Mini, Federal Terrace, Highland, and Patterson Elementary Schools, along with Loma Vista Environmental Science Academy.
Each hub will provide students with educational resources and access to instructors who will support them as they work on independent study assignments prepared by their teachers.
Meal Plans for Displaced Students
Officials reassured families that free breakfast and lunch would be available to all students at the designated hubs during the closure. The district remains focused on minimizing the impact of the disruption while investigators continue looking into the costly theft.
