FARGO, ND – Picture this: you step inside for a quick errand, leaving your truck running to stay warm on a bitter winter night. You return moments later, and it’s gone—stolen right from your driveway. That’s exactly what happened to Mike Hansen in Fargo, North Dakota, when a thief swiped his 1991 Nissan Hardbody pickup, along with his phone and tools. Even more shocking? This is the second time his truck has been taken. Now, Hansen is braving subzero temperatures to track it down, determined to reclaim what’s his.

A Brief Errand Ends in Theft

It happened on a Tuesday night. Hansen left his pickup idling in the driveway while he carried groceries into his apartment. He was inside for just a couple of minutes, planning to park the truck after unloading.

When he came back outside, the vehicle was nowhere to be seen.

The thief didn’t stop at the truck—they took everything inside, including Hansen’s phone, snowblower, and shovels, which he uses for a small side business.

Watching for His Truck in the Cold

The next day, Wednesday, February 12, brought freezing weather to Fargo, with temperatures dropping below zero.

While most stayed indoors, Hansen stood outside for hours at the corner of 13th Avenue and South University Drive, searching for his stolen Nissan. He stayed put, hoping to spot the familiar Hardbody among the passing cars, unwilling to give up on finding it.

A Truck Stolen Twice Before

This isn’t the first time Hansen has dealt with this.

His truck was stolen once before and later found in Moorhead, covered in black spray paint and abandoned. After spending $2,000 on suspension repairs to get it running again, he thought it was safe.

Now, with it gone again, he’s planning to install a loud car alarm when – and if – he recovers it.

A Stranger’s Kindness on a Cold Day

While Hansen kept watch in the icy weather, a passerby stopped to offer him a hot cappuccino. The small act brought a bit of warmth to an otherwise tough day, showing him that kindness still exists even in frustrating times.

Hansen isn’t letting the cold or the odds stop him.

He’s set on finding his truck, a vehicle that holds value beyond just getting around—it’s tied to his work and his past efforts to keep it running. In Fargo’s harsh winter, his search continues.

  1. Swear I saw athis or a very similar pickup parked where no one parks at the 52nd Ave Walmart last Wednesday .
West side of lot by the piles of snow. I should have taken a photo of it. Hope he finds it. Heartbreaking and expensive!
