KANSAS CITY, MO – On a bustling Super Bowl weekend, a chilling story unfolded that left a promising Kansas City, Missouri journalist dead and authorities scrambling to connect the dots. Adan Manzano, a 27-year-old Telemundo sports reporter, was found lifeless in a New Orleans, Louisiana hotel room. Now, police say the woman linked to his death—48-year-old Danette Colbert—might be behind a string of crimes stretching back years, including at least one other fatality.
Arrest Sparks Investigation
Colbert, a Slidell resident with a lengthy criminal record, was nabbed on February 7 after security footage caught her exiting Manzano’s hotel room.
Moments later, she allegedly swiped his credit card for a spending spree across New Orleans stores. Initially facing charges of bank fraud and theft, her arrest opened a floodgate of reports from others claiming similar run-ins with the so-called “Bourbon Street Hustler.”
Kenner police say at least twelve individuals have since come forward, alleging they or their loved ones fell prey to her schemes.
A Pattern of Deception
Authorities now believe Colbert’s tactics go beyond petty theft.
In one case, Jason Egle, a 50-year-old traveling nurse, recounted waking up disoriented at his parents’ home in October 2021. His phone was gone—replaced with a dummy—and he suspected he’d been drugged.
Egle said Colbert posed as an Uber driver to get him there, though no evidence ties her to the rideshare company.
Another man, Eric Maul, reported a similar encounter in the French Quarter that same year. After his phone vanished, thousands of dollars drained from his accounts. He filed a police report, but no action followed.
Fatal Connections Emerge
The trail grows darker with two other cases.
John Jenkins, 55, was found unresponsive in a New Orleans hotel room last December. While Colbert’s name wasn’t initially linked, Kenner police now suspect her involvement.
Three years earlier, David Butler, 52, accused her of drugging him, emptying his savings, and abandoning him in a dire state during a visit to the city. Convicted last October of computer fraud and theft, Colbert dodged prison time. Instead, a judge ordered restitution and five years of probation—a decision Butler believes allowed her to strike again.
The Final Encounter
Manzano’s case fits the grim pattern.
Hotel cameras showed Colbert entering his room with him at 4 a.m., only to leave alone shortly after. Twelve hours later, staff found him dead during a wellness check after he missed a scheduled meeting. Toxicology results are pending, but the timing raises questions.
Known for his dedication as a father and rising star in sports journalism, Manzano’s loss has rattled his colleagues at Telemundo Kansas City.
Unanswered Questions
As police dig deeper, the scope of Colbert’s alleged crimes continues to widen.
With multiple victims stepping forward and at least two deaths potentially tied to her actions, investigators face mounting pressure to unravel the full extent of her trail across Louisiana. For now, the focus remains on piecing together evidence—and preventing further harm.
