MARATHON, FL – Four people are safe after their boat began sinking off the Florida Keys, prompting a swift rescue by the U.S. Coast Guard on Sunday evening. The terrifying ordeal unfolded just 11 miles north of Marathon when the 27-foot vessel started taking on water. Thanks to the quick actions of the boaters and the Coast Guard, all four individuals were rescued before they were in danger of entering the water.

Coast Guard Responds to Urgent Call

The emergency began around 5 p.m. on Sunday when watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Key West received a distress call. The boaters reported their 27-foot vessel was taking on water, and they were in need of assistance.

The situation was serious and Coast Guard Station Marathon launched a boat crew to the scene to provide immediate help.

Quick Rescue Saves Four Lives

Upon reaching the location, the Coast Guard crew brought all four boaters on board safely. No injuries were reported, and the individuals were promptly transported to the 33rd Street boat ramp.

Their swift and coordinated rescue likely prevented what could have been a much worse outcome.

Coast Guard Remains Prepared for Emergencies

The Coast Guard confirmed that the vessel’s owner is making arrangements for its salvage.

“Our crews consistently prepare to respond to these situations day and night,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class Zachary Aparo, a Sector Key West watchstander.

“Thanks to their prompt call for help, we were able to get on scene quickly and conduct a successful rescue before they entered the water.”
