FORT COLLINS, CO – A real-life holiday twist straight out of a Christmas movie: someone stole Baby Jesus from a Nativity scene in Colorado, only to return the stolen figurine with a handwritten apology. While the culprit may have had their “Grinch moment,” their conscience got the better of them, and they made things right—kind of.
The Theft and the Search for the ‘Grinch’
It all started earlier this week when a surveillance video showed a figure casually swiping the Baby Jesus from the Nativity scene at Old Town Square in Fort Collins, Colorado.
The police quickly shared a blurry image of the suspect, calling for help from the public to identify the thief, now dubbed the “Grinch” of Fort Collins. Despite the police’s efforts, the suspect remained unidentified at the time.
A Grinch’s Change of Heart
Then, the plot thickened. On Thursday, police had an update: the Baby Jesus had been anonymously returned—along with a handwritten apology note.
The figurine, which appeared a bit worse for wear, was dropped off at Poudre Fire Authority Station No. 1. Along with the Baby Jesus was the note, which read, “I am really sorry, I made a dumb mistake in the moment. It won’t happen again.”
While the figurine was back, the “Grinch” was still a mystery.
The Return and the Damage
The return of the Baby Jesus, however, wasn’t without consequences. The figurine, which had been taken in the dead of night, was now missing a few fingers. Nonetheless, the apology note seemed to smooth things over—for now. Police have yet to find out who took the figurine or who decided to bring it back with an apology.
This unusual holiday incident ended with the Baby Jesus’ return and the “Grinch” leaving behind more than just a figurine: a lesson in doing the right thing, even if you’ve made a silly mistake.
