IRVINE, CA – A cunning scheme unraveled in Irvine, California, last week when a duo from Romania allegedly swiped a $2,000 gold necklace from an unsuspecting resident. Authorities have now arrested the suspects and are urging others who may have fallen prey to their deceptive tactics to step forward. The Irvine Police Department released striking images of the accused, hoping to jog memories and uncover more cases tied to this slick operation.
Suspects Nabbed After Cross-County Chase
The arrests of Dinu Adelina, 29, and Miclescu Cosmin, 34, came after a relentless investigation sparked by a theft reported last week.
According to police, the victim had their pricey necklace replaced with a worthless trinket in a matter of moments.
The scam unfolds like this: the crafty con artist engages a victim in casual conversation, then offers a piece of jewelry to thank them for their help or “to honor them.” As they place the fake jewelry on the victim, they secretly remove the person’s more valuable piece. Like a talented magician, their success is all sleight of hand!
Police tracked down a suspect vehicle and license plate tied to the crime, leading detectives to Los Angeles County. After days of staking out the car, the cunning crooks returned to Irvine on Saturday, only to find themselves in handcuffs. A search of their vehicle turned up a stash of costume jewelry, hinting at a broader spree.
Charges Filed, Public Warned
The Romanian pair now faces serious charges of conspiracy and grand theft, with bail set at a hefty $500,000.
Booked into Orange County Jail, this crafty con artist duo awaits their next move behind bars. Authorities suspect their reach extends beyond this single incident, prompting a public plea for information.
“We are showing the suspects’ faces because we believe there are possibly other victims of their scheme,” police stated. “Please get in touch with mmahmood@cityofirvine.org if you have any information about this duo or to report similar cases.”
How to Stay Safe
Irvine police are now advising residents to stay vigilant.
If a stranger approaches with an overly friendly demeanor, keep your distance. Flashy jewelry might catch more than admiring glances—it could draw the eye of thieves prowling for their next mark. With this scam exposed, the public’s awareness could be the key to stopping these tricksters for good.
