AVALON, CA – A routine Saturday turned into a life-or-death ordeal for a man and his loyal dog, stranded miles from shore off California. On February 15, 2025, the U.S. Coast Guard sprang into action, pulling off a gripping rescue after the pair vanished from a sailing boat near Avalon. The operation unfolded under the cover of night, with choppy waters and fading hope adding to the tension.
Distress Call Sparks Urgent Search
The Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles got the alert around 8 p.m. A frantic call came from a 34-foot sailboat, roughly 18 miles east of Avalon, reporting that a man and his dog had gone missing.
The caller, unable to reach the Coast Guard directly, patched through details via TowBoatUS Ventura. The last sighting of the duo? Four to five hours earlier, before the reporting party dozed off.
Massive Response Launched
Without hesitation, the Coast Guard mobilized. A boat crew from Station Los Angeles raced to the scene, while the Cutter Narwhal, already on patrol, changed course to join the hunt.
Air support roared in from Sector San Diego, and local teams—BayWatch Avalon and BayWatch Cabrillo—jumped in to assist. Every second counted as the search fanned out across the dark Pacific.
Dinghy Spotted, Lives Saved
A Coast Guard helicopter crew zeroed in on the missing boater about 1,400 yards from the sailboat.
There, clinging to a small dinghy, were the man and his dog. BayWatch Cabrillo swooped in, ferrying them to dry land where paramedics stood ready. The man suffered mild hypothermia but escaped serious harm. His canine companion emerged unscathed.
Safe Return to Shore
The Coast Guard didn’t stop at the rescue.
They hauled the dinghy back to the stranded sailboat, which had been left disabled. The Cutter Narwhal then towed the vessel to Newport Beach, wrapping up a night of high-stakes teamwork on February 15, 2025. The operation showcased the Coast Guard’s relentless drive to protect lives at sea—even the four-legged ones.
