On November 22, 2024, a fire inspector, a business employee, and a fire safety worker were decommissioning an outdated CO2 fire suppression system at a commercial property in Norton. During the process, a valve unexpectedly failed, releasing a massive amount of CO2 gas. The leak quickly created a life-threatening situation, as CO2 displaces oxygen, posing a severe risk of asphyxiation.
The sudden release trapped the fire inspector, while the other two individuals managed to escape the hazardous space. Recognizing the danger, the employee immediately contacted emergency services, initiating a “Mayday” call at 9:24 a.m.
