SALT LAKE CITY, UT – A chaotic night in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah ended with a 47-year-old man in custody after police say he caused thousands of dollars in property damage while intoxicated. Authorities believe the man, Damien McNear, targeted several locations, leaving a trail of shattered glass and scratched vehicles across the city.
Police Respond to Late-Night Vandalism
Officers from the Salt Lake City Police Department were called to the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office at approximately 9:59 p.m. on Wednesday. Responding to reports of a man breaking windows, officers arrived to find McNear allegedly in the act. He was taken into custody on-site without further incident.
Trail of Alleged Destruction
The investigation revealed McNear allegedly “intentionally, but randomly” damaged property at multiple downtown locations, according to police. Authorities believe he likely used a rock during the spree. Among the damaged properties:
- Mercedes-Benz dealership: Police say McNear scratched 10 vehicles.
- Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office: Two windows were shattered.
- Salt Lake County Health Department: A window was chipped.
The total cost of the damage is still being assessed. However, police estimate the damage at the district attorney’s office alone exceeds $5,000.
Charges Filed
McNear was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on three counts of felony property damage. Investigators are working to finalize damage estimates for the dealership and health department while piecing together additional details about the alleged rampage.
The incident has left local authorities and residents questioning what led to the spree of destruction. Further updates are expected as the investigation continues.
