STEVENSVILLE, MD – An explosion tore through a cannabis extraction facility in Stevensville, Maryland, on Wednesday afternoon, injuring two people and prompting an extensive emergency response. The blast occurred at PharmaCann, a company specializing in cannabis extraction, sending shockwaves through the area and forcing nearby businesses to evacuate.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene around 2 p.m. after reports of the explosion came in. The Kent Island Volunteer Fire Department, along with fire units from neighboring counties, responded swiftly to contain the situation.

Hazmat teams from Anne Arundel and Dorchester counties also arrived to address the potential threat posed by hazardous materials.

Sprinklers Contain Blaze, But Injuries and Damage Are Significant

The Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office, which is leading the investigation, revealed that the facility’s sprinkler system played a crucial role in limiting the damage.

However, two individuals were injured in the explosion. While one sustained severe injuries, officials confirmed they were not life-threatening.

“Investigators credit that emergency response systems, including alarms and ventilation, functioned as designed, minimizing damage and injuries,” the state fire marshal’s office stated.

Despite these safeguards, the blast caused significant disruption. Buildings along Log Canoe Circle were evacuated as a precaution, and operations in the area came to a halt.

Dangerous Chemicals May Have Contributed

PharmaCann specializes in cannabis extraction, a process involving highly flammable chemicals such as propane and butane.

Officials reported that the explosion originated in an “extraction booth” where these chemicals were in use. The exact cause of the blast is still under investigation.

The financial impact of the explosion is also being assessed. Initial estimates suggest damages exceeding $250,000, though the final figure has yet to be determined.

For now, the facility and its surrounding area remain under scrutiny as authorities assess the extent of the damage and ensure the area is safe.
