OAKLAND COUNTY, MI – An explosion occurred on Tuesday, November 26, at the General Motors (GM) Milford Proving Ground in Michigan, where the company conducts vehicle testing. The blast prompted a large response from fire and HazMat crews, but fortunately, no injuries were reported, and no facilities were damaged.

Emergency Response and Containment Efforts

The explosion, which involved one of the oil wells located on GM’s property, triggered a quick response from GM’s fire crews, who battled the flames at the scene. According to a statement from General Motors, “Local fire departments are standing by if needed,” while GM’s team worked to get the situation under control.

“We are aware of an incident at the Milford Proving Ground involving one of the oil wells located on GM property. Thankfully, no one was injured, and no facilities were damaged. GM fire crews are on the scene and have the incident under control,” the company confirmed.

In addition to GM’s fire department, Michigan State Police also responded to the scene of the explosion. They reported that the blast caused significant damage to nearby homes, including “windows being blown out, doors blown in, items knocked off shelves/walls.” Thankfully, no one in the surrounding area was injured either.

Despite the damage to nearby structures, authorities emphasized that there was no risk of hazardous materials affecting the public. The Michigan State Police noted, “There are no hazardous materials concerns for the public.” This reassurance came amid initial concerns about the cause and extent of the explosion.

While the immediate situation was under control, the cause of the explosion remains unclear. Michigan State Police confirmed that it is still under investigation, and as of now, there is no definitive answer on what triggered the blast.
