WASHINGTON, D.C. – It’s a case that shocked the nation’s capital—and the nation. A 14-year-old girl received the maximum sentence available for a juvenile in Washington, D.C., after her role in the brutal killing of a 64-year-old disabled man, Reggie Brown. The assault, which took place in 2023, was committed by five girls, ages 12 to 15, who admitted they attacked Brown simply because they were bored. Adding to the horror, they took selfies with his lifeless body afterward.

On Monday, the last of the five attackers was sentenced to seven years in a restricted youth detention center, known as “juvenile life.” Once she turns 21, she will be released.

Senseless Violence and a Deadly Outcome

Brown’s murder shocked the community. The brutal assault began when the group of teens chased him down in an alley, where they kicked and stomped him to death.

According to prosecutors and the victim’s family, one of the girls inflicted some of the most severe injuries to Brown’s head.

The teens had no personal connection to their victim—their only motive, as one of them reportedly admitted to police, was that they were bored.

Authorities revealed that an adult male was also present during the attack. However, he remains at large and has not been identified or charged.

Sentences Handed Down to the Young Attackers

The 14-year-old’s sentencing marks the final stage of this grim case. She pleaded guilty to her role in the killing and will remain in a youth detention facility until her release at 21.

Judge Kendra Briggs, who presided over the case, described her actions as delivering some of the most vicious blows during the assault.

Other members of the group have already faced their punishments. Two teens pleaded guilty last year and received three-year prison sentences for assault with a dangerous weapon. The 15-year-old, the oldest of the group, provided key testimony against two of the others.

Another 13-year-old was convicted of second-degree murder and received the maximum penalty for a minor in Washington, D.C. Like the 14-year-old, she will remain in a restrictive youth facility until she turns 21.

Shocking Behavior and Lack of Remorse

One of the youngest attackers, a 12-year-old girl at the time of the crime, was sentenced on December 17. She was given a similar sentence but will be released at 20. During her sentencing, she was called out for her shocking behavior, which included boasting about the killing as if it were a trivial act.

Prosecutors played a voicemail in court, where the teen could be heard bragging about her role in Brown’s death. Her casual attitude toward the murder, including comments about using Brown’s belt as a trophy, deeply disturbed the victim’s family.

One of Brown’s sisters, who could not bear to listen to the voicemail in its entirety, left the courtroom in tears. She described the emotional toll of hearing the attacker’s words and the unbearable pain it caused her family.

A Tragic End with No True Closure

Although the legal proceedings have concluded, Brown’s family remains shattered by the senseless violence that claimed his life. While the attackers face their respective sentences, the emotional scars left on his loved ones will endure far beyond the courts’ decisions.

Reggie Brown’s family continues to carry the heavy burden of loss, mourning a life taken too soon by senseless violence. As they seek peace and healing, they hold close the words of Psalm 34:18: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” Though justice has been served, their grief remains, and their strength in honoring Brown’s memory reflects their enduring love.
