MIAMI, FL – Imagine a high-ranking police official accepting bribes to let drug cartels smuggle tons of cocaine into the United States. That’s exactly what happened in The Bahamas, as U.S. authorities revealed a massive conspiracy involving corrupt Bahamian government officials. The arrest in Florida of key figures, including the chief superintendent of the Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF), shines a light on the dangerous link between law enforcement and drug trafficking.

A Network of Corruption and Drug Trafficking

U.S. officials unsealed an indictment on November 27, 2024, charging 13 individuals in connection with a sprawling drug trafficking operation that allegedly saw tons of cocaine smuggled through The Bahamas to the U.S. The charges implicate several high-ranking Bahamian officials, including RBPF Chief Superintendent Elvis Nathaniel Curtis and Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF) Chief Petty Officer Darrin Alexander Roker.

The indictment claims that since at least May 2021, Curtis, who oversaw airports throughout the country, used his position to provide drug traffickers with protection in exchange for bribes. He allegedly helped facilitate shipments of cocaine by allowing them safe passage through airports, even offering armed support from police officers when necessary.

One of the most striking details includes a conversation in which Curtis allegedly explained that for a $2 million bribe, a high-ranking Bahamian politician would authorize the involvement of armed RBPF officers to assist in the smuggling operation.

U.S. Authorities and Their Role in Exposing the Conspiracy

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) was instrumental in uncovering the conspiracy, with help from the Royal Bahamas Police Force through their Operation Bahamas, Turks, and Caicos (OPBAT) counternarcotics program.

However, according to the indictment, Bahamian officials used their position to sabotage U.S.-led operations. The accused reportedly denied the DEA access to vital evidence, misled agents with false information, and even warned traffickers when certain operations were targeting them.

Roker, a member of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force, allegedly provided crucial intelligence about U.S. Coast Guard operations to drug traffickers. His actions were reportedly motivated by bribes, which allowed traffickers to evade law enforcement efforts designed to stop the flow of drugs through the region.

Arrests and Charges

On Monday, Curtis and Roker were arrested in Florida, while other key figures were apprehended overseas, including Lorielmo Steele-Pomare and William Simeon, both of whom are accused of being involved in the conspiracy. Luis Fernando Orozco-Toro was arrested a day later.

The charges against the 13 defendants include conspiracy to import cocaine, the use and possession of firearms during the commission of the crime, and conspiracy to use firearms in furtherance of the drug trafficking scheme. If convicted, the individuals face up to life in prison.

Exposing a Deep Betrayal of Public Trust

The arrest of these officials marks a significant blow to both Bahamian law enforcement and U.S. drug interdiction efforts. DEA Administrator Anne Milgram expressed the gravity of the situation, saying, “The arrests of corrupt officials, including a leader of the Royal Bahamas Police Force and another government official in the Royal Bahamas Defence Force, expose the alarming betrayal of public trust that has enabled tons of cocaine to flow through The Bahamas and into the United States.”

Milgram also highlighted the increase in drug seizures in 2024, noting a 5.4% rise in cocaine seizures across the United States. These actions, she said, show just how far corrupt officials were willing to go for personal gain, jeopardizing countless lives in the process.
