DELTONA, FL – A Florida woman struck a 16-year-old boy riding his scooter, then fled the scene after covering her truck’s license plate with tape. The frightening hit-and-run happened in broad daylight in Deltona, and authorities quickly worked to track down the driver. The teen, who was crossing the street on his way home from school, sustained serious injuries but is expected to recover.
The Incident Unfolds in Deltona
The crash occurred on December 19, just before 4 p.m., at the intersection of Gage Avenue and Noah Street in Deltona, Florida.
The 16-year-old boy had been riding his scooter home from Pine Ridge High School when a black Chevrolet Silverado struck him while he was using a crosswalk. The impact knocked the teen to the ground, causing a serious head injury and an arm injury. Despite the injuries, the victim remained conscious and alert after the collision.
Driver’s Attempt to Conceal Identity
After the crash, the driver, later identified as 37-year-old Sarah Wright, initially stopped to check on the teenager. However, she soon returned to her truck, covered the license plate with paper and tape, and sped off.
A nearby witness, who had been checking her mailbox at the time of the crash, noticed the suspect’s suspicious actions. She was able to recall part of the license plate number, and a Ring camera captured footage of the truck fleeing the scene. This provided law enforcement with crucial evidence that helped track down the driver.
Authorities Act Quickly, Arrest the Suspect
Within minutes, investigators were able to use the partial license plate number and a nearby License Plate Reader camera to locate the suspect’s vehicle. Authorities found Wright in Flagler County, with assistance from the Florida Highway Patrol and the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.
She was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a crash with injuries and driving with a suspended license. Wright was booked into the Flagler County Jail on a $3,500 bond.
Teen’s Injuries and Recovery
The victim, despite his injuries, is expected to make a full recovery. He received treatment for a serious laceration to the back of his head, which required staples, as well as care for his arm injury. The swift response from both the victim and witnesses ultimately led to the capture of the suspect and helped bring a resolution to the disturbing incident.
