JACKSONVILLE, FL – A 21-year-old Florida man is heading to jail after committing an act so shocking it left both victims’ families in disbelief. Michael Gainer III was sentenced to nine months in prison after pleading guilty to urinating on the graves of two young homicide victims and damaging their tombstones. His actions, captured on social media, have sparked outrage and left a lasting stain on Jacksonville’s Restlawn Memorial Park.

The Crime and Discovery

The incident took place in Jacksonville’s historic Restlawn Cemeteries and Cremation Gardens, where the graves of Darryl Lundy Jr. and Dari’one Flanigan, both victims of gun violence, were found vandalized in August. Lundy, 17, was killed in 2022, while Flanigan, 18, died in 2019, and both cases remain unsolved.

It was on August 19 that Jacksonville police discovered the damage, after being alerted by the victims’ mothers, who had each recently visited the graves. One of the mothers, who regularly maintained her son’s grave, reported no issues during her visit on August 16. However, the following visit revealed the shocking destruction.

How Michael Gainer Was Caught

Gainer’s involvement came to light after videos surfaced on social media, showing him urinating on the graves and damaging the tombstones.

In one video, Gainer can be seen using a large rock to damage the tombstone, while also spitting and urinating on it. In another livestream, Gainer allegedly admitted to the vandalism, stating he did it “to get someone to respond to his statements.”

The social media posts, along with screenshots sent to the victims’ mothers, led to Gainer being identified. Both mothers later confirmed his identity when shown a photo lineup in September.

Legal Consequences and Community Reaction

Following his arrest, Gainer initially pleaded not guilty to two felony counts of injuring or removing a tomb or monument. However, he changed his plea to guilty and was sentenced on December 19 to nine months in jail. In addition, he was given 42 months of probation and ordered to complete 300 hours of community service, specifically cleaning graveyards.

The damage to the graves of Lundy and Flanigan was repaired, and both memorials were successfully restored, providing some comfort to the grieving families.
