JACKSONVILLE, FL — A 57-year-old substitute teacher, Geanene White, was arrested in Florida on charges of child abuse and contributing to the delinquency of minors following an alarming incident at YMCA Tiger Academy in Jacksonville. The event, which took place on February 12, involved White allegedly encouraging students to physically attack a classmate.

Incident Details Emerge from Sheriff’s Report

According to an arrest affidavit filed by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office on March 2, the incident began when a student ignored White’s instruction to split into small groups for school work.

White reportedly turned to four other elementary school-aged students and asked who among them could “beat him up.” Four students volunteered by raising their hands, and White called on them individually to hit and kick the targeted child.

The situation escalated further when White allegedly pushed the victim to the ground, causing him to strike his head on a desk. She then dragged him across the floor by his collar. Police later observed cuts and bruises on the boy’s head during an interview.

Conflicting Accounts Surface

White reported the victim to school authorities, stating he required “behavioral assistance” and claiming he had been involved in two classroom fights. However, she denied prompting the assault.

In contrast, classmates—including one of the students who participated in the attack—told authorities that White had instigated the incident.

One of the attackers specifically told police that the teacher instructed him to take part.

White now faces one count of child abuse and four counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

School and YMCA Respond

YMCA Tiger Academy and Duval County Public Schools confirmed that White had been vetted as a substitute teacher prior to the incident. The YMCA issued a statement to the reporters addressing the situation, though further details from the statement were not provided in the affidavit.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to review the case.
