CUMMING, GA – A chilling scene unfolded in Forsyth County, Georgia, when a newborn girl was found discarded in the woods, sealed inside a plastic bag with her umbilical cord still attached. The infant, left to fend for herself in June 2019, narrowly escaped death thanks to a group of local teenagers who heard her cries piercing through the night. Last week, the woman responsible—41-year-old Karima Jiwani—was sentenced to 15 years behind bars, followed by 15 years of probation, after admitting guilt to charges of attempted murder and cruelty to children.

A Rescue Against All Odds

That fateful night in June 2019 began with two teenagers growing uneasy over faint sounds drifting from the woods near their home.

Initially mistaking the noise for an animal, their father joined the search after their persistence. Moments later, the family uncovered the shocking truth: a baby, barely alive, trapped in a plastic bag amid the trees.

Authorities later named her “Baby India” and rushed her to a hospital for urgent care.

The Long Road to Justice

Investigators launched an exhaustive effort to track down the child’s mother. Using DNA evidence, they pinpointed Jiwani as the culprit after nearly four years of tireless work.

The breakthrough came with help from Othram Labs, a company specializing in advanced DNA analysis, which processed evidence to identify the infant’s biological parents.

By early 2022, detectives had confirmed the father’s identity, but evidence cleared him of any involvement in the abandonment. Focus then shifted to Jiwani, whose surveillance and collected data sealed her fate as the sole perpetrator.

A Pattern of Concealment

Authorities revealed that Jiwani had a troubling history of hiding pregnancies.

Conversations with her family and friends exposed her efforts to keep Baby India’s existence a secret, a pattern seen in other unexpected births she’d concealed.

At the time of her arrest in 2023, she was living with her other children. Forsyth County Sheriff Ron Freeman expressed dismay, noting the callousness of abandoning a defenseless child in such a cruel manner. He emphasized that the evidence pointed to Jiwani acting alone at the crime scene.

Honoring Resilience and Faith

Baby India, now a thriving 5-year-old, stands as a symbol of hope amid this dark chapter. Those touched by her story—her rescuers, the deputies, and the community—find solace in her survival.

As the Bible says in Psalm 27:10, “Though my father and mother forsake me, the Lord will receive me,” offering a touching reminder of divine care for the abandoned.

Her journey inspires gratitude for the lives spared and the justice served.

A Case Closed, A Child Saved

The deputy who first saved Baby India from the woods played a key role in Jiwani’s arrest, using the sheriff’s own handcuffs to bring her into custody. While no explanation can erase the gravity of Jiwani’s actions, the court’s ruling ensures accountability.

Today, Baby India’s health and growth reflect a triumph over a grim beginning, thanks to the quick actions of a few and the determination of many.
