WAILUKU, HI – Three girls trapped on a rock in the middle of a fast-moving stream faced a life-threatening situation as rising waters surged around them. The drama unfolded Sunday in Wailuku, Hawaii, when emergency responders launched a daring helicopter rescue to pull them from the danger zone. With powerful waters closing in, the girls’ fate hung in the balance until quick-thinking rescuers swooped in to save the day.

Stranded in the Middle of Iao Stream

The Maui County Fire Department received an urgent call about the trapped girls, stranded on a rocky outcrop in the Iao Stream.

The water, fed by rainfall, rose rapidly, turning the stream into a torrent. Firefighters arriving on the scene found the girls clinging to the rocky “island,” unable to escape as the current raged around them.

A Helicopter Lifeline

A helicopter crew was quickly deployed, providing the only possible lifeline for the stranded girls.

One by one, the crew hoisted them to safety, preventing what could have been a devastating outcome. Video footage shared by the fire department captured the dramatic scene—waters crashing by as the girls awaited rescue near a small waterfall.

Warning of More Danger Ahead

The fire department issued a warning about continued flash flood risks, with more rain expected in the coming days. Officials cautioned that flooding could strike quickly and unexpectedly.

“It does not need to be raining where you are for flooding to take place in streams, gulches, and drainages,” the fire department stated.

Residents have been urged to remain vigilant as weather conditions remain unstable.
