PUEBLO WEST, CO – A terrifying ordeal unfolded in Pueblo West, Colorado when a horse plunged into a collapsed septic tank, leaving only her head and front hooves visible above the sewage. Rescuers sprang into action, battling the frigid conditions to save the stranded animal before it was too late.
Horse Stuck Chest-Deep in Sewage
The Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office reported that the horse had been trapped in chest-deep sewage, shivering and unable to free herself.
Emergency responders arrived to find the distressed animal wet, cold, and shaking from exposure.
“She was wet, cold and shaking from being in the frigid liquid that was in the tank,” the sheriff’s office confirmed.
Massive Team Mobilizes for Rescue
Multiple agencies rushed to the scene, including the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Services, Pueblo West Fire, Pueblo West Metro District, the Community Animal Rescue Team (CART), and a local veterinarian.
With teamwork and precision, they worked to lift the frightened horse to safety.
Sedated and Lifted to Freedom
Rescuers carefully secured the animal, wrapping tow straps around her belly and under her front legs.
Meanwhile, the veterinarian sedated her to keep her calm during the delicate operation.
A truck-mounted crane from Pueblo West Metro was brought in, hoisting the horse out of the hazardous pit.
Safe and Recovering
Once on solid ground, the horse was monitored closely as she came out of sedation. Fortunately, she was soon back on her feet, showing no immediate signs of serious injury.
The sheriff’s office later shared, “Kudos to all involved in this complicated but rewarding rescue.”
Thanks to the swift and coordinated efforts of emergency responders, what could have been a tragic accident ended with a safe and successful rescue. The horse is reportedly doing well.
