HONOLULU, HI – A breathtaking scene unfolded in Honolulu, Hawaii on Friday when a man allegedly swiped a yacht, triggering a swift response from the U.S. Coast Guard. Authorities caught the suspect after a high-speed chase on the water, leaving boaters and onlookers stunned by the brazen theft.

Erratic Yacht Sparks Alarm

The drama began around 4:34 p.m. when Coast Guard Sector Honolulu received reports of a 43-foot yacht weaving dangerously through the harbor.

The vessel’s wild maneuvers breached a restricted security zone near Piers 6-11, posing a threat to nearby boats.

At the same time, the yacht’s owner contacted authorities, confirming the boat had been taken without permission from Kewalo Basin Harbor.

Coast Guard Springs Into Action

With marine traffic frozen in and out of the harbor, a Coast Guard boat crew raced to intercept the runaway yacht.

When they radioed the operator about the security violation, he floored it, bolting out of the harbor at top speed. Undeterred, the crew gave chase, capturing the pursuit on video as they closed in on the fleeing vessel.

Suspect Detained After Tense Standoff

The yacht eventually came to a halt, allowing the Coast Guard team to board and take the man into custody.

They towed the vessel back to shore, where Honolulu Police Department officers and State of Hawaii Sheriff Division deputies stood ready to take over.

The suspect now faces serious charges, including theft in the first degree, unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, and criminal property damage.
