BRIDAL VEIL, OR – A brutal winter storm transformed an Oregon highway into a disaster zone last Thursday, as blinding whiteout conditions triggered a massive pileup on Interstate 84. Dozens of vehicles, including cars and trucks, were caught in the chaos as snow and ice made the roadway nearly impassable. Authorities scrambled to respond to the dangerous situation, shutting down a stretch of the highway west of Multnomah Falls.

Chaos on I-84: Dozens of Vehicles Involved

The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office initially estimated that up to 100 vehicles were involved in the crashes. However, after closer assessment, officials revised the count to between 20 and 30.

“Low visibility made it difficult to differentiate initially between vehicles that were involved and vehicles that were only stopped,” the sheriff’s office explained.

Among the wreckage, one SUV burst into flames, adding another layer of danger to the already treacherous scene. Fortunately, all occupants managed to escape unharmed. While no fatalities were reported, an unknown number of people suffered mostly minor injuries.

Dangerous Conditions Blamed for Wreck

Oregon State Police pointed to a mix of icy roads, near-zero visibility, and treacherous winter weather as key factors in the pileup.

“Numerous factors, such as icy and slick roads, limited visibility, and near-white-out conditions, contributed to the crashes,” the agency said in a statement.

Troopers responded to at least eight separate accidents, with four individuals requiring hospitalization. However, local law enforcement agencies handled additional crashes, though the total number remains unclear.

Officials Urge Drivers to Stay Off the Roads

The region remained under a winter storm warning until 10 a.m. Friday, with officials strongly advising against travel. At the time, authorities urged residents to stay off the roads until conditions improved, warning that the storm’s lingering effects could still pose significant hazards for motorists.
