ASHLAND, OH – On a snow-choked Sunday, a snow plow operator in Ashland, Ohio, found himself jolted by a sudden impact. A vehicle smashed into the back of his rig and sped off, leaving the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) grappling with yet another setback in their battle against a fierce winter storm. The plow was tirelessly clearing roads when the collision occurred, a stark sign of the dangers facing these essential workers.
Hit-and-Run Chaos in the Snow
The incident unfolded in ODOTâs District 3, covering north-central Ohioâs snow-laden counties. Fortunately, the plow driver escaped injury, but the fleeing motorist left behind a damaged truckâand a frustrated crew.
This wasnât an isolated event: Matt Bruning, ODOT Press Secretary, said that this marked the 36th snow plow struck this winter season alone.
“We are all in a hurry, but during a snow and ice event, road conditions can change quickly,” ODOT stated.
“Be extra alert, especially when the snow is falling. An inicident [sic] like this results in one less plow truck out on the roadway.”
Winter Storm Challenges Ohio Roads
Northern Ohio faced relentless weather that day, with winter storm warnings and advisories blanketing the region. Forecasts predicted 4 to 8 inches of snow, snarling travel and testing road crews.
The hit-and-run only compounded the strain, pulling a vital plow from action at a critical time.
“Motorists should give our plows plenty of space to do their job,” ODOT urged.
“You will likely find the road in front of the plow worse than the road behind them. We canât be everywhere all the time. Heavy snow is difficult to keep up with, so plan ahead and allow for extra travel time during and immediately after snow events.”
A Call for Caution
With snow falling fast and roads turning treacherous, the incident shines a spotlight on the need for driver awareness. ODOT crews remain on the front lines, working to keep Ohio moving despite mounting obstaclesâone hit-and-run at a time.
