IDAHO FALLS, ID – On a frigid November day in 2023, a bizarre scene unfolded along a snowy Idaho road: a man, unclothed and tucked inside a sleeping bag, muttering strange remarks. That man, 50-year-old Jeremy Albert Best, had just committed unthinkable acts that would unravel over the next few days. Now, he’s confessed to the brutal killings of his pregnant wife and their infant son, leaving a quiet mountain community reeling.

Guilty Plea Ends Death Penalty Threat

Best appeared in court on Thursday, formally admitting to first-degree murder in the death of his 10-month-old son, Zeke Gregory Best, and second-degree murder for the deaths of his 39-year-old wife, Kali Best, and their unborn daughter, Freya.

The plea deal, finalized after mediation with input from the victims’ family, spares him from execution.

Prosecutors from Teton and Bonneville counties announced that a judge will likely sentence him to life imprisonment on July 23.

Chaos Unfolds in Swan Valley

The grim saga began shortly before noon on November 30, 2023, when deputies from the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office responded to a general store in Swan Valley, near Idaho’s border with Wyoming.

A nude man—later identified as Best—wandered through the shop, slumping over a counter before being guided outside. Medics transported him to a hospital for physical and mental evaluation, releasing him later that day.

Roughly 12 hours later, a 911 call from Teton County revealed trouble at the Best family home on Skyline Loop in Victor. Deputies arrived to find Kali Best lifeless inside. Investigators soon pieced together that her husband had killed her before fleeing with their son.

Amber Alert and a Grim Find

Authorities swiftly issued an Amber Alert for Zeke, naming Best as an armed and highly dangerous suspect.

The search ended on December 2, 2023, when hunters east of Idaho Falls spotted a naked man in a sleeping bag along a roadside. Deputies arrested Best and found his black SUV off the road nearby, where Zeke’s body lay inside, his life ended by a knife wound to his neck. Earlier, Best had fatally shot his wife, police determined.

A Family Lost

Kali Best, expecting her second child, had built a life in Idaho’s mountains with her husband and son. Loved ones recall her devotion to her dogs and her joy in motherhood, believing she fought to shield her children until the end.

The unborn child, named Freya by family, never had a chance to draw breath. Though Best’s motive remains undisclosed, his guilty plea closes a chapter on this devastating tragedy.

Honoring the Victims

In the wake of this heartbreaking tragedy, we pause to honor Kali Best, her son Zeke, and her unborn daughter Freya, whose lives were stolen too soon. Their family and friends now carry an unimaginable burden, yet find solace in faith.

As Psalm 34:18 promises, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit,” offering comfort amidst such profound loss.

Their memory endures in the love they inspired, a light that no darkness can extinguish.
