MASON CITY, IA – An Iowa man accused of swindling grocery stores out of thousands of dollars using a sneaky self-checkout scam is admitting to his crimes. Authorities say he pulled off the scheme multiple times before finally getting caught.

Busted for Brazen Theft Scheme

Blake Dale Braun, 28, of Mason City, is now facing the consequences after investigators say he repeatedly tricked local Hy-Vee grocery stores into letting him walk away with unpaid items.

Instead of scanning his groceries at self-checkout, Braun allegedly scanned a separate barcode in his hand—one for an item worth only 36 cents!

Stolen Goods Total Over $3,500

Authorities say Braun executed this scheme over and over, ultimately stealing $3,522.32 worth of merchandise before law enforcement put an end to his fraudulent activity.

He was arrested and charged with ongoing criminal conduct, along with two counts of second-degree theft.

Guilty Plea Entered, Sentence Pending

Braun has now pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree theft. While his conviction is confirmed, a sentencing date has not yet been set.

The case remains open.
