BATON ROUGE, LA — A quiet Sunday morning in August 2021 erupted into horror when Aaron Morgan unleashed a wave of violence that would forever change multiple families’ lives here in Baton Rouge, Lousiana. The 32-year-old Morgan’s devastating path began in his family home, where he viciously attacked his 78-year-old grandmother, Diane Gafford, with a knife. His rampage continued as he turned the blade on his own mother, inflicting injuries so severe she required immediate hospitalization.
Shopping Center Terror
But Morgan wasn’t finished.
After the domestic assault, he fled to Highland Marketplace, where the situation escalated further. There, he carjacked a vehicle and opened fire on three unsuspecting shoppers.
In what would prove fortunate timing, the shootings occurred near Ochsner Urgent Care, allowing medical personnel to provide immediate aid to the wounded until emergency services arrived.
Police Pursuit and Capture
Law enforcement quickly spotted Morgan, leading to a brief but intense car chase. When his vehicle could no longer continue, Morgan attempted to escape on foot, exchanging gunfire with deputies.
The confrontation ended when officers shot him twice, finally halting his rampage.
Justice Served
This week, nearly four years after the incident, Morgan accepted a plea deal that will keep him imprisoned for 120 years.
He pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of manslaughter in his grandmother’s death, along with five counts of attempted first-degree murder and armed robbery.
The lengthy delay in reaching this resolution stemmed from the complexity of coordinating with multiple victims and ensuring justice for everyone involved, according to Assistant District Attorney Vincent Nguyen.
For the victims’ families, the sentencing brought mixed emotions. One relative described the outcome as bittersweet, marking the end of a long wait for justice while reopening painful memories of that tragic August morning.
Then-Mayor Sharon Weston Broome’s words in the aftermath of the incident captured the community’s shock, as she called for prayers for the recovering victims and praised the good Samaritans who rushed to help the wounded in the immediate aftermath of the attacks.
The sentence effectively ensures Morgan will spend the remainder of his life behind bars, bringing a measure of closure to a case that shook the Baton Rouge community to its core.
