AVON, MA — Heartbreaking story! A Massachusetts man, Thadeus Joseph, 23, faces murder charges in the death of his 53-year-old mother, Astrid Joseph. The incident took place at the family home in Avon, leaving authorities and the community grappling with the tragic events.

Grisly Scene Found at Family Home

Astrid Joseph was found dead on the floor of her Avon residence by her husband, Yval Smith. A pool of blood surrounded her head, and a blood-stained carving knife lay nearby.

According to Norfolk County District Attorney Michael Morrissey, evidence at the scene pointed to a struggle before her death. The family car was missing when Smith arrived, adding to the unsettling circumstances.

Earlier that morning, around 10 a.m., Smith received a troubling phone call from his wife. During the call, he overheard Thadeus Joseph say he had taken her phone. Astrid responded, pleading, “I’m your mother. Give me the phone,” before the line went dead. Alarmed, Smith rushed home, only to find his wife lifeless.

Suspect’s Mental Health Struggles

In the days leading up to the incident, Thadeus Joseph had spoken to his parents about his mental health. He expressed thoughts of self-harm and told them on March 4 that he was “taking the morning off for a mental health day.” Hours later, the fatal encounter occurred.

Police located Thadeus about four hours after the killing at a shopping center in a neighboring town. The family car was missing when Yval Joseph arrived home. Authorities have not confirmed whether Thadeus Joseph used it to leave the scene.

Court Appearance and Disturbing Statements

Thadeus Joseph appeared in court on March 5, 2025, where Prosecutor Christine Cullen outlined the case. She described his behavior during booking as erratic.

While in custody, Joseph reportedly made chilling remarks to officers, laughing as he suggested that killing his mother and stomping her face was all it took to reach this point.

A judge ordered him held without bail. His next court date is set for April 10, 2025.

Investigation Ongoing

Authorities continue to piece together the events. The case has left Yval Smith mourning the loss of his wife and grappling with the actions of his son.

Further details about Thadeus Joseph’s mental state and motives remain under review as the legal process unfolds.
