OKLAHOMA CITY, OK — The walls came tumbling down around one of the area’s most influential religious figures this week as former presidential spiritual adviser Robert Morris faces multiple charges of child abuse here in Oklahoma.
A Spiritual Empire’s Dark Shadow
An Oklahoma grand jury handed down five indictments against Morris, 63, alleging he committed lewd or indecent acts with a child during the 1980s.
The former Gateway Church founder, who once counseled President Donald Trump, stepped down from his position in 2024 amid mounting accusations.
From Presidential Circles to Prison Possibility
Morris built his religious empire from scratch, establishing Gateway Church in the affluent Dallas, Texas suburb of Southlake in 2000.
The institution grew into one of America’s largest congregations, attracting political heavyweights including Trump, who named Morris to his evangelical advisory board in 2016. Trump later visited the church’s Dallas campus in 2020 for a fundraising event.
Allegations Surface After Decades
The charges stem from accusations made by Cindy Clemishire, who states Morris sexually abused her beginning in 1982 while staying with her family in Hominy, Oklahoma.
Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond emphasized the gravity of the accusations, noting the particular breach of trust when a pastor allegedly exploits their position.
Church Response and Aftermath
Gateway Church released a statement expressing support for Clemishire and others affected by the situation. The congregation, which Morris led until his 2024 resignation, continues to grapple with the allegations against its founder.
Morris is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
