HOWELL, MI — What started as a routine Wednesday afternoon in Livingston County, Michigan transformed into a devastating sequence of events when a hang glider pilot crashed through the weakening ice of Lake Chemung. Despite a heroic multi-agency rescue effort, the man did not survive.
Heroes on Breaking Ice
In a display of extraordinary courage, rescue teams ventured 300 yards across treacherous ice that crackled beneath their feet.
Donning bright yellow safety gear, these brave first responders bear-crawled their way toward the victim, pulling a rescue skiff behind them through the deteriorating conditions.
Coast Guard’s Race Against Time
At 3:40 p.m., hope arrived from above as a Coast Guard helicopter thundered onto the scene. A rescue specialist descended from the aircraft, rushing to secure the victim in a lift system.
By 3:55 p.m., the helicopter was airborne with its precious cargo, racing toward waiting emergency medical teams.
Rescuers Become Victims
In a twist of fate, after successfully retrieving the hang glider pilot, the brave Livingston County rescue workers found themselves stranded on the unstable ice.
Their rescue skiff became immobilized, forcing the Coast Guard helicopter to return for a second lifesaving mission. Eight firefighters were later treated for cold exposure.
The tragedy comes amid unseasonably warm temperatures, with recent readings reaching near 60 degrees, creating treacherous conditions on Michigan’s lakes and waterways.
A Community in Mourning
As our community grieves this loss, we’re reminded of the biblical passage from Psalm 46:1-2: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea.” Our hearts go out to the family of the deceased, and we stand in gratitude for the selfless first responders who heroically risked everything to help a fellow human being in distress.
