MINNEAPOLIS, MN – U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers in Minnesota seized a staggering $1.34 million worth of fraudulent gas engines in a shipment from China. The operation, described as “unusual” by officials, targeted a massive delivery at Minneapolis-St. Paulâs Express Consignment Facility. Authorities revealed the engines were meant to reach “various” businesses across the U.S., posing potential risks had they entered the market unchecked.
Shipment of 1,134 Engines Intercepted
On January 23, CBP officers intercepted 42 pallets containing a total of 1,134 gas engines at the Minnesota-based facility. The engines, which lacked the required documentation, were flagged as part of routine inspections aimed at protecting U.S. borders from fraudulent or dangerous imports.
Once discovered, CBP turned the engines over to Homeland Security Investigations to determine if broader criminal activities were linked to the shipment. Officials confirmed the engines could have posed significant risks if not properly vetted.
CBP Praises Officers for Swift Action
LaFonda D. Sutton Burke, Director of Field Operations at CBPâs Chicago Field Office, commended the officers and import specialists for their sharp instincts in identifying the shipment.
âIâm extremely proud of the diligent and professional work of CBP officers and import specialists who applied their keen knowledge and expertise to effectively target, identify and hold these suspicious shipments,â Burke said.
She described the seizure as âunusualâ but essential, adding that it demonstrated how CBPâs training and expertise safeguard the public from harmful goods.
âThis is an unusual seizure, but a critically important one, and our officers once again show how their training and skill enables CBP to be a strong frontline of defense against faulty goods that can endanger the lives of innocent citizens,â Burke stated.
Investigation into Supply Chain Ongoing
While the engines have been confiscated, the investigation is far from over.
Homeland Security Investigations will delve deeper into how the fraudulent goods were shipped, who orchestrated the transport, and whether additional parties could face legal consequences.
For now, CBPâs efforts have prevented potentially hazardous engines from entering unsuspecting hands across the country.
