ST. PAUL, MN – A Minnesota community is reeling after a retired grandpa was struck and killed by a distracted driver allegedly glued to her phone. The heartless 20-year-old driver, accused of scrolling TikTok, now faces serious criminal charges.
81-Year-Old Man Killed in Midday Collision
Mariska Kay Nunn, a 20-year-old from Detroit Lakes, faces one count of criminal vehicular homicide following the tragic accident. Authorities say the fatal crash occurred around noon on Saturday, Jan. 25, when Nunn’s Ford Focus struck 81-year-old Dean Chadbourne.
According to the criminal complaint, Detroit Lakes police responded to the crash on Randolph Road at approximately 12:15 p.m.
Officers arrived to find Chadbourne lying in the eastbound lane, critically injured. Emergency responders rushed him to a hospital, but doctors were unable to save him.
Nearby, police found Nunn’s Ford Focus with a shattered windshield sitting in the westbound lane. The damage offered grim evidence of the impact.
Driver Admits to Watching TikTok
Initially, Nunn told police she hadn’t seen Chadbourne on the road.
However, under further questioning, she admitted she had been distracted by TikTok videos on her phone when the crash occurred.
A search of Nunn’s phone confirmed that she had accessed TikTok minutes before dialing 911 to report the incident. Investigators say this discovery supports the criminal charges against her, which carry severe legal consequences.
Chadbourne’s death leaves family and friends mourning the loss of a man taken too soon by what prosecutors argue was a preventable act of recklessness. Nunn now faces a battle in court over a tragic decision that authorities claim had deadly consequences.
