RICHFIELD, MN – A tense confrontation in Richfield turned deadly when a 29-year-old Minnesota man, angered over the theft of items from his van, fired at a pickup truck as it fled the scene. The shooting, which took place outside Luke Joshua Cain’s home, struck and killed a Minneapolis woman. Cain now faces second-degree murder charges in connection with her death.
The Tragic Incident and Police Response
On the morning of December 6, police responded to a call around 4 a.m. about a woman found severely injured in the back of a Ford F-150. Officers discovered 26-year-old Sofia Rose O’Hotto from Minneapolis inside the vehicle. She was rushed to the hospital in critical condition but succumbed to a gunshot wound to the back of her head.
Earlier that morning, Luke Joshua Cain, 29, noticed people allegedly stealing from his van, which was parked outside his home on 5th Avenue South in Richfield. Cain went outside to confront the individuals, but they quickly fled the scene in the grey pickup truck. As the suspects drove off, Cain fired at least two shots at the vehicle.
Cain’s Changing Story and the Investigation
Cain initially denied firing a gun when speaking with police. He explained that he saw the suspects stealing from his van but did not mention anything about a weapon or the shooting.
However, after police found stolen items from his van in the truck, Cain’s story changed. He later admitted to firing two shots at the truck, though he claimed the suspects had not threatened him or been armed.
Surveillance video from Cain’s home corroborated his account of the events. Cain also revealed that after the shooting, he took the firearm to his cabin in Aitkin to hide it before returning to Richfield.
Legal Consequences and Next Steps
Cain has been charged with second-degree murder for the shooting, which ultimately led to O’Hotto’s death. He remains in the Hennepin County Jail, with his first court appearance scheduled for Friday afternoon. The case continues to develop as authorities gather more evidence and prepare for the upcoming proceedings.
