ST. PAUL, MN — A Minnesota missionary couple’s journey to Angola, Africa took a tragic turn when Beau Shroyer, 44, was killed on October 25, 2024, in the town of Thienjo. His wife, Jackie Shroyer, now faces murder charges in connection with his death, leaving their five children and supporting communities reeling from the loss.

Beau and Jackie Shroyer, originally supported by Lakes Area Vineyard Church in Detroit Lakes, moved to Angola in 2021 with their five children as missionaries affiliated with SIM USA, a North Carolina-based organization focused on cross-cultural mission work. The couple was among the first missionary families to relocate to Angola with SIM USA following the easing of COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns.

Fatal Attack in Remote Area

According to the Angola Press Agency, Beau was lured to a remote location under the pretense of assisting someone with car trouble. There, he was attacked and stabbed by two men hired by the family’s 24-year-old home security guard.

Police recovered a knife and approximately $5,000 in Angolan currency during their investigation.

Beau’s body was discovered on October 25, and his remains were repatriated to the United States on December 11. A graveside service attended by family was held on December 21.

Authorities allege that Jackie orchestrated the killing, paying the security guard and his two accomplices $50,000 to carry out the act.

Angola media reported that law enforcement suspects Jackie was romantically involved with the security guard and planned Beau’s death because she did not want to leave Angola when his mission term ended.

Arrest and Legal Proceedings

Jackie Shroyer was arrested by Angolan authorities on November 4, 2024, four days after Beau’s death, along with the security guard. She was formally charged with murder in early November and remains in custody awaiting trial. No court date has been set, though officials expect it within the next six months.

SIM USA confirmed on December 3 that Jackie has legal representation, including an Angolan attorney and support from two American lawyers. The organization expressed confidence that the Angolan government is working to establish the facts and ensure a fair trial.

The FBI and U.S. State Department are monitoring the case and have been involved in the proceedings, according to SIM USA. The SIM Angola team has been providing Jackie with supplemental food and visiting her during authorized hours while she remains detained.

Community Responds to Tragedy

Back in Minnesota, Lakes Area Vineyard Church’s lead pastor, Troy Easton, addressed the congregation on Monday, informing them of Jackie’s formal charges.

Before their move to Angola, Beau had served as a police officer in Detroit Lakes and worked in real estate, according to the Star Tribune. The couple’s five children are now under the care of close family members, with support from both SIM USA and the Lakes Area Vineyard Church.

SIM USA, established in 1893, has a long history of facilitating missionary work worldwide. The organization continues to stand by the Shroyer family, offering assistance during this difficult time.

A verified GoFundMe page has also been set up to support the family following Beau’s death.

As the investigation unfolds, the case has drawn attention from both Angolan and American authorities, with the focus now shifting to Jackie’s upcoming trial and the future of the couple’s five children.
