AUSTIN, MN – A 16-year-old boy from Austin, Minnesota, faces serious charges following a deadly shooting on February 15. Phillip Tyrek Gills has been charged with one count of second-degree murder and one count of second-degree attempted murder in connection with the incident that claimed the life of 27-year-old Opoka James Nathanael, also from Austin. The Mower County Attorney’s Office plans to try Gills as an adult.
The shooting left one man dead and another injured, shaking the quiet community. Authorities responded to the scene after receiving reports of gunfire, leading to Gills’ arrest later that day.
Incident Unfolds in Broad Daylight
Police were called to the 1100 block of 5th Avenue Northwest just after 1:30 p.m. on February 15.
Upon arrival, officers found Nathanael in the driver’s seat of an SUV, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy revealed that Nathanael had suffered seven gunshot wounds to the back.
Another victim, who had been in the vehicle, managed to exit the car and was taken to a nearby hospital by a neighbor after sustaining gunshot wounds. That individual was later transferred to St. Mary’s Hospital for further treatment.
According to the surviving victim, he and Nathanael had picked up Gills earlier that day. Gills entered the backseat of the car and opened fire without warning. The survivor believes Nathanael was the intended target of the attack.
Suspect Apprehended After Fleeing Scene
Multiple witnesses reported seeing a suspect running from the area immediately after the sound of gunshots.
One witness provided police with surveillance footage showing the suspect entering a nearby home. The homeowner confirmed the individual in the video was Gills and noted he was still inside the residence.
When police entered the home, Gills came downstairs wearing different clothing than what was seen in the footage. A search of the property later revealed the clothes from the video in a washing machine. Gills was taken into custody following the discovery.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to piece together the events leading up to the shooting.
A Moment for Reflection

We pause to honor the memory of Opoka James Nathanael, whose life was tragically cut short, and extend our deepest sympathies to his loved ones and the injured survivor grappling with this loss. The Austin community, though shaken by this violent act, stands resilient, united in its strength and shared resolve to heal. May we find hope in the pursuit of justice and the promise of brighter days ahead for all those touched by this tragedy. – Jack and Kitty Norton, Founders and Editors
