SEATTLE, WA – Imagine wandering through the vast, icy wilderness for over five weeks, with no guarantee of making it out alive. That’s exactly what Sam Benastick, a 20-year-old hiker from British Columbia, faced when he went missing in the northern Rocky Mountains, about 500 miles north of Seattle, Washington. After an agonizing wait and weeks of fear, this story took a remarkable turn when Benastick was found alive—against all odds.

The Search for Benastick

Sam Benastick was reported missing on October 19 after he failed to return from a solo hiking trip in Redfern-Kiely Provincial Park, a remote region known for its rugged terrain and freezing temperatures. The park, located in northern British Columbia, had seen temperatures drop below zero degrees Fahrenheit in recent weeks, making the search even more urgent.

For more than a month, search and rescue teams, including RCMP officers and local volunteers, combed the area, hoping to find any sign of the missing hiker. The search stretched over a vast expanse of mountain and tundra, an unforgiving landscape that only added to the worry of Benastick’s fate.

The Discovery

The breakthrough came on Tuesday, when two people working near Redfern Lake spotted someone who appeared to be Benastick. The men were headed to the trail for work when they recognized the hiker, and they immediately approached to offer assistance. After confirming his identity, they transported him to safety. Benastick was then taken to the hospital, where police arrived to confirm he was the missing hiker.

Benastick told authorities that after initially staying in his car for a couple of days, he walked to a nearby creek where he made camp for 10 to 15 days. He then moved down the valley to set up camp in a dried creek bed. As he made his way through the area, he eventually flagged down the two men who came to his rescue.

Praise for Search Efforts

The successful rescue was met with praise from authorities and search teams who had worked tirelessly to find Benastick. RCMP Cpl. Madonna Saunderson expressed relief, stating, “Finding Sam alive is the absolute best outcome. After all the time he was missing, it was feared that this was would not be the outcome.”

The efforts of the Fort Nelson and North Peace Search and Rescue teams, as well as the Canadian Rangers and other volunteers, were crucial in bringing the young hiker home. RCMP also acknowledged the “many” local volunteers who dedicated their time to the search, contributing to what turned out to be a successful conclusion.

After more than five weeks of uncertainty, the story of Sam Benastick’s survival and rescue is nothing short of extraordinary. His remarkable resilience and the dedication of search teams brought an unexpected and heartwarming outcome to what could have been a tragedy.
